Hollywood actor and longtime Tibet supporter Richard Gere joined spiritual leaders, dignitaries, and global admirers in Dharamshala as celebrations began ahead of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday.

While the Dalai Lama’s birthday falls on July 6 as per the Gregorian calendar, the festivities commenced on June 30 in accordance with the Tibetan calendar. Gere, speaking at Nechung Monastery, expressed his joy at participating in the event: “We’re here in Dharamshala to celebrate His Holiness’s 90th birthday, his good health, strength, and compassion… Nechung is one of my oldest friends. It’s always a delight being here.”

A significant spiritual ritual took place at the monastery, where the Nechung Oracle, a protector deity of the Tibetan community, entered a trance to bless the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) and its leadership. CTA President Penpa Tsering explained the oracle’s role during uncertain times: “We seek guidance from the oracle during periods of difficulty and uncertainty.”
